LA has its own unique psychedelic environment which can be seen today through the surreal lives of influencers and those scratching at the door of hot, empty fame. But in the mid-1960s, there was a genuine fascination for where the mental boundary was and how it could be snapped in two. The Human Expression never made an album, flew low, and failed to make the immediate mark of those with similarly mind-bending ambitions. This 1994 compilation unveils their scorched music superbly. Most of the tracks are deadly simple. They feature kamikaze lyrical leaps in the name of love or psychedelic obsession and stung, steady instrumentation. It is oddly inspiriting.

My copy is the 2013 Mississippi Records re-issue which includes a bonus 7”. Apparently, the band was given the opportunity to record “Born To Be Wild” before Steppenwolf, but turned it down on the grounds that they thought it was crass.
