It’s said that you need a car to get places in Los Angeles. How strange that you’ll be stranded without an engine in the city of angels. Death Bells have lived inside the vastness of Southern California—the long stretches of grime next to seemingly airbrushed portraits of wealth. Once the British affectation is overlooked, as well as the plain directness of the first half, ‘Between Here & Everywhere’ swells with a bizarre hope. The second half is simply superb. As the frank instrumentation pours over into expression, a more poignant record emerges. The band finds the right note just in time to leave behind a profound intrigue.
