‘Kismet’ is the follow-up to 2020’s glossy Notes of Love EP. It renews the project’s supernatural cult TV show impression, but operates at a lighter tempo. Benoit B is capable of producing tremendously lush sounds—much less capable, it seems, at herding them in gratifying ways across an LP. Much of ‘Kismet’ could be a soundtrack, so much so that it often feels like there is something missing: a visual aid we cannot access and are left searching for. The fuller sounds Benoit B constructs (as on ‘2 Strangers in a Room’) are dreamy and complete, but the record as a whole is punctured by translucent ideas that leave the listener twitching with dissatisfaction.
‘Kismet’ is out now via Natural Selections.
